Sun's out Skin's out
This heat and humidity can play havoc with your skin.
Here are a couple of tips to keep you glowing:
1. DO NOT fall into the over-cleansing trap.
We tend to perspire in this weather, which can leave us feeling sticky. Our natural tendency is to wash more frequently.
However, cleansing, especially with soapy cleansers can remove our skin's protective barrier. This naturally occurring barrier protects our skin from bacteria which causes acne and locks in moisture. When we remove it our skin risn't able to retain moisture, so it registers that the skin is dry and produces more oil more, in effect exacerbating the very issue we were trying to prevent.
By cleansing once a day with a natural, botanical oil you will remove the toxins, dirt and makeup from your skin without removing the protective oils, thereby minimising the risk of breakouts.
2. Cut back on heavy foundations that clog your pores and make it difficult for your skin to breathe.
The heat triggers excess sweat which then mixes with the existing dirt and bacteria on your face, causing breakouts. Heavy makeups, especially primer can enhance this problem. Primer is like the glad wrap of makeup, it covers the skin and doesn't allow it to breathe.
If you must wear makeup for work switch to a tinted moisturiser and remove as soon as you get home to give your skin some downtime.
3. Switch to a lighter moisturiser.
In the summer, heat increases sebum production, so you may find yourself oilier than usual. If you're using a rich serum, such as our Arohanui blend, you may like to consider switching to our Waiwai Serum, which is lighter and more suitable when your skin is producing more natural oil.
Your skincare needs to be responsive to your skin and how it behaves. Regulate the amount and frequency of your moisturiser use depending on how your skin is feeling.
4. If you do get burned, apply an oil
Any change in the colour of your skin is skin damage. You need to support the skin to get on the road to healing as fast as possible. Applying our body oil will support and accelerate this process. Many customers have reported their skin is markedly better after applying our Mahana oil to their sunburnt skin.
5. Finally, drink plenty of water - obvious but important.
Keep a water bottle with you throughout the day and sip frequently to avoid dehydration. Remember by the time you start to feel thirsty you're already dehydrated.
