3 Reasons why it's important to follow your Skincare Manufacturers Instructions

3 Reasons why it's important to follow your Skincare Manufacturers Instructions

Here's three reasons why it's important to follow the manufacturers instructions when trialing new skincare products.

Number One: Your Skin's Health

When using sympathetic ingredients in their skincare manufacturers have to work to safety guidelines around specific ingredients that they include and a recommended daily dose.

These recommendations are based on a single use per day. So if you're layering your products from different manufacturers who are each working to the same daily use guidelines, you can effectively be doubling up on synthetic ingredients that might otherwise be harmful to your skin.

For example, parabens are a group of chemicals found in some cosmetics, body creams, hair products and sunscreens. They can be absorbed through the skin. Some parabens have hormone-disrupting properties, they're known as endocrine disruptors, which means they disrupt your hormone balance. Our skin is our biggest organ and everything that we put on our skin absorbs through the skin and then into our bloodstream. An endocrine disruptor means is that the chemical will mimic the hormones, so it disrupts your hormone balance, which has been linked to a number of chronic illnesses.

Number Two: Product Effectiveness

Most skincare companies work with the assumption that you'll use all their products together, or at least one of their products in the isolation.

They have no way of knowing how the product's going to respond when you layer them with other products from other brands, that haven't been used or tested together.

For example, in our LoveSkin range, we have products which are designed to heal the skin barrier, and we don't have an exfoliant. However, many people  assume that they need an exfoliant in order to have healthy skin. So they introduce an exfoliant from another range, which effectively undoes the work of the LoveSkin products.

Number Three: Your Overall Health

If you're layering products, which each have the maximum recommended daily dose of a particular synthetic ingredient, those ingredients are going to absorb into your bloodstream, through your skin, which will affect your overall health in the long term.

Finally, keep in mind that it takes 30 days for the skin to replenish after you introduce a new product, your skin to your product. So you do need to allow 30 days for the full effects of a new product to be revealed on the surface of your skin. If you're constantly introducing new products to your routine, it's very difficult to establish which products are helping your skin, as you start to notice changes occurring.

That is why I recommend a methodical, systematic and patient approach to any changes you make to your skincare routine, especially if you've been having problems with your skin. It's much easier to start with a basic routine, wait to see how your skin responds and allow the necessary healing to occur. You can always introduce more products later, once you've established a healthy base line for your skin.
